Art sector workers are now safe to return to studios, rehearsal rooms, and art centres to prepare for work under Covid-19 guidelines.

Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, tweeted on Monday to confirm that artists are able to return to work under new changes.

Angela Dorgan, Chair of The National Campaign for the Arts (NCFA), said during an online NCFA sector meeting yesterday that while the reopening of galleries and museums for the public is good, she also understands that artists who create those creative spaces are needed to return for work.

NCFA emphasised on their push for artists to be able to work, rehearse, record or prepare for work in the arts sector while complying to Covid-19 guidelines.

“It’s good to reopen but artists need to prepare for that reopening,” she said, “so we wanted to make sure that [Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media] Catherine Martin and others were aware of the unique challenges to our sector around coming out of this crisis, and the stages and speed that will be necessary for this crisis, while acknowledging we’re still in the context of a slow opening. We are all too aware that confidence and excitement can be whipped from under us at any given time.”

Dorgan also said we could expect clarity when it comes to the reopening of theatres and cinemas around 7th June.

“We wanted to make sure other departments understood that in order for you to go to an exhibition the artists have to start working and have access to their studios; in order for you to go to gigs, musicians have to rehearse; in order for you to go to a play, that play has to be rehearsed and it has to be peopled and planned,” said Dorgan.

A total of 185 members composed of individual artists and representatives from various arts organisations participated in the meeting. The meeting also discussed updates for reopening guidelines, support and work for those working in the arts sectors.

NCFA is still in discussion for confirming a solution to support artists financially and to encourage the Artist UBI test scheme announced earlier this year.
