12 Artists newly elected to Aosdána

12 new members are elected to the artists’ organisation Aosdana, it was announced yesterday.

12 newly elected members from five disciplines will be joining the association of creative artists in Ireland, Aosdána.

Prominent author Kevin Barry, choreographer Liz Roche, and filmmaker Pat Collins are among the new members elected to Aosdána.

Thirteen members of Aosdána have passed away since last year’s general assembly. The latest addition of 12 members will bring the current membership of the organisation to 249 members, the maximum being 250. There is a tie for the last place which will be filled after a post ballot arrangement that will decide the final position.

The 12 newly elected members of Aosdána are:

  • Gerard Byrne (Visual Art)
  • Pat Collins (Visual Art)
  • Jim Doherty (Music)
  • Margo Harkin (Visual Art)
  • Martin Lynch (Literature)
  • Gina Moxley (Literature)
  • Valerie Mulvin (Architecture)
  • Mairead O’hEocha (Visual Art)
  • Arthur Riordan (Literature)
  • Liz Roche (Choreography)
  • Jennifer Walshe (Music)

Aosdána was founded in 1981 on the initiative of a group of writers with support from the Arts Council of Ireland. The 39-year old organisation honours artists who have made an outstanding contribution to the creative arts in Ireland. It honours artists from mainly five disciplines: literature, visual art, music, choreography, and architecture.
